INTERNATIONAL BORDER CROSSERS IN THE NÓGRÁD GEOPARK

International geoparkers appeared at the Slovak-Hungarian stateborder on the topic of Photography and Climate Change project to visit the spectacular borderline geosites of the transnational Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark on January 18, 2023.

They arrived in the framework of the ERASMUS+ 2022-1-HU01-KA210-SCH-000081037 project. The guests did not come here by chance, the event series of the Medves Photo Marathon is also known in the European Geoparks Network, and its reputation attracted them.

The representatives of the Madonie (Italy) and Kula-Salihli (Turkey) Global Geoparks and the planned Lithuanian Yotvings Geopark first visited the Eresztvény administrative center of the Hungarian side of our geopark and the house of the GeoWonders in Salgóbánya, where they took part in lectures and consultations. Then they on a field trip climed up to the symbol of the geopark, the Somsokő Castle and went down to the bent columnar basalt pipes of the Castle Hill there.

They were already hungry when arrived at the Ipolytarnóc Fossils (the main scientific gateway to the geopark, managed by the Bükk National Park Directorate), where they were welcomed by delicious Palóc dishes and they also got a taste of the world-famous geological heritage of the Prehistoric Pompeii.

Despite the rainy weather, the sun came out for a short time to make the visit in a good mood, but smiles also brightenned it, climate change here or there.

Erika Kovácsné Ferenczi, the teacher of the Újlaki Hungarian-Italian Bilingual Primary School and the coordinator of the program brought the participants together. In addition to adults, there were also students among the visitors, it is hoped that many of them will return with school trips to the ancient borderless world of this unique geopark of the Palóc ethnic group.
